Polaroid Instant 3X4 Mobile Printer GL10A

Polaroid Instant 3X4 Mobile Printer GL10A Review

Conventional computer printers may be able to print color photos but many people shrink back when quality seems to fall short when compared to prints from a professional lab. Polaroid GL10A is a compact printer that uses ZINK technology to deliver top quality 3-by-4 inch prints with the color and feel that you've always enjoyed.

At the heart of the ZINK Technology is the patented ZINK Paper, an advanced composite material with cyan, yellow, and magenta dye crystals embedded inside, and a protective polymer overcoat layer outside. The crystals are colorless before printing, so ZINK Paper looks like regular white photo paper. Heat from a ZINK-enabled device activates the crystals, forming all the colors of the rainbow. The printing process is now radically simple. Just add ZINK Paper!

ZINK stands for Zero Ink - an amazing new way to print in full color without the need for ink cartridges or ribbons. The ZINK Technology encompasses both the ZINK Paper and the intelligence embedded in every ZINK-enabled device. The technology enables a new category of color printing devices and paper that work as a system to print in a whole new way. ZINK Technology is based on advances in chemistry, engineering, physics, image science, and manufacturing. ZINK was developed over several years and has generated an IP portfolio that includes over 100 patents and patents pending.

The Polaroid GL10A incorporates ZINK and delivers high quality pictures, sized 3"x4", that you can really appreciate. Its small mobile size, light weight, and rechargeable battery make this a great mobile printer to take with you anywhere.

2waist of money
By Zack Lock
Out of frustration I say: "This is the dumbest product of an awesome idea"
This does not connect wireless to a mac. The software provided is does not serve any purpose other than open picture to print them. The old school "Polaroid" effect is done at the software level. You can't just print one to get that effect.

5A Lot of Printer for the Money
By D. C. Eaton
Update 3/20/13
OCR optical character recognition is done using Omnipage16 by Nuance (see more below). It works very well but it has an annoying quirk. Omnipage16 will CRASH if the printer is not ready (set to Scan/Remote PC/Twain) before you tell it to scan a page. In this case, you MUST ctrl/alt/delete, start Task Manager, and close Omnipage16 from the Application tab. Then switch to the Processes tab and End the 2 Twain processes you will find on the list. Finally restart Omnipage16.

I purchased this from a major office supply company whose name starts with "S". I will update this review if my opinion changes.

My old all-in-one is an HP Officejet Pro 7580. It worked great for 16 months until the genuine HP ink began to leak. Replacing the ink did no good. It was costing a fortune to keep buying HP ink so I began using generics, but generics are NOT at all water resistant. The ink jets have slowly gotten clogged over time until the color does not work anymore and even B&W is iffy. I am feed up with ink jets! You cannot beat the per page cost of lasers, but what to buy?

Spec Comparison:
I compared the following similarly priced monochrome laser all-in-one printers: Brother MFC7860, Cannon imageCLASS MF4880, Cannon imageCLASS MF4890, Samsung SCX-4729FW, and Okidata MB451w. All scan in color. All have auto duplex print, but ONLY Okidata and the Canon 4890 have duplex (double sided) copy and scan. Okidata has a Duty Cycle (a measure of durability) of 50,000 pages per month while all the others are rated about 10,000 pages. The Okidata is not flimsy and weighs 44 lbs while the others weigh about 22-25 lbs. Samsung and Cannon have toner cartridge integrated with the drum (replaced whenever you replace the toner), while Brother and Okidata have a separate drum. Brother and Samsung have annoying 2-line displays while Cannon has 5 lines with backlight. Okidata's 3.5 inch display has variable lines, but about 5-6 lines with backlight AND a help function. Print speed for Okidata is 30 cpm single sided and 17 cpm duplex (duplex is much faster than the other printers). Time to first page (in idle) is 5 seconds, but requires 25 seconds warm-up from Power Save, and even longer from Sleep.

Okidata Customer support: Live support 24 hours/day!
I called Okidata tech support several times, once getting though immediately, and the other times on hold for a few minutes. They claim the normal wait time is 60 seconds and that they have live support 24 hours/day! You will reach an actual person located here in the US or Canada and they don't use a script with canned answers. When I called, they seemed both helpful and friendly and were able to answer my questions or quickly email me with the answer. Warranty for the US and Canada is one year ON SITE.

User manuals (basic, advanced and wireless setup):
The manuals are detailed, generally clear and well illustrated and are available on line. Update: as other reviewers have noted, a physical copy of the manuals are not in the box. Cannon and Brother have equally good manuals, but Samsung has an annoying pictogram type manual.

Installation and setup: easy
I have a fairly recent HP computer with Win 7, but drivers are available on-line for Win 8. Unpack, add paper and you are ready to copy. Wireless setup (using manual wireless setup) is only a few steps and is similarly easy IF you know your SSID (network name), password and security type (mine is WPA). It took much longer to read through the extensive manuals to see if I wanted to change any of the default options (for instance change fax auto answer to manual answer).

Function.
For the most part, the display menu system is self explanatory and guides the user in a helpful way. Many menus have a displayed "?" which means you can press the "help" button for more information. I see no problems with the print quality and Toner Saver seems almost as good. It prints fairly quietly (55dB), it is very quiet in Power Save and silent in Sleep. Power Save is 18 watts while Sleep is 3 watts. You can set it to turn off after a set amount of time. Both single side and duplex copying and printing are all a snap. Scanning from a PC is a bit confusing until you realize you have to select Scan/Remote PC (confusingly not Network or Local) on the printer, and then go to the PC. Then the ActKey software works great to scan - it works much like the software for my HP inkjet printer and the color scan result is just as good as HP. I have not faxed yet.

Cost to Own:
The Okidata comes with a 1000 page starter cartridge. There are no generics. There are generics for Brother, Samsung and Cannon, but I see a lot of online complaints concerning generic toner. The Okidata toner currently sells for about $40 and has a spec of 1500 pages. This seems to be a roughly similar per page cost to Cannon and Samsung, but a higher cost to that of Brother toner, but Brother laser printers generally cost more upfront. Okidata claims a life of about 25,000 pages for their drum. For what ever it is worth, Okidata claims their "lifetime total cost to own" is substantially less than Samsung and slightly less than Brother.

Update 2/11/13:
A few printer makers have Android apps that allow wireless printing from your phone. Although Okidata does not have such an app, the Google Play store has a free app called Cloud Print which allows wireless printing from your phone to any printer connected to your PC (on a WiFi network). It works well from my Samsung phone to both my wireless Okidata printer and my old wired HP inkjet. Smart Office by Picsel also works, but costs a few dollars.

Update 2/12/13:
OmniPage SE ver 16 OCR software (by Nuance) is on the installation CD as a bonus, but Nuance does not provide any support, so I imagine this could potentially be a problem. Installation of OmniPage from the CD on my Win 7 computer went OK, except a start icon was not generated. I reinstalled ("repaired") and I still had to search for OmniPage (C:\Program Files (x86)\ScanSoft\OmniPage16\OmniPage16.exe). Once I had OmniPage running, it requested to setup the scanner (Okidata must be set to Scan/Remote PC). OmniPage has options of plain text, formatted text, and "True Page" and all gave perfect output as a Microsoft Word file.

Update 4/21/13
I had a minor problem recently. The printer suddenly stopped talking to my computer. I called Okidata, and they told me that I somehow had setup the printer to automatically log out every so many days. I suppose this is a means to improve security, but I sure did not want it. Okidata walked me through disabling that "feature".

4Takes some patience
By Shastastan
The first reviewer did such a comprehensive review that there's little more for me to say. The print quality is excellent! I haven't tried to hook it up to the network yet. I'm using a usb to my desktop which does not have wifi.

To me, the setup was confusingly simple or should I say specious? I kept looking for a quick start booklet, but there was only a small print set of pictures. I finally found the dvd inside. It has the manual and quick start guide. Both of those are okay to follow. I had tried to install before reading thinking that the dvd would have detailed instructions but it did not. Everything is in the pdf's. There's a procedure to follow to connect the usb (not provided) and power cables. That has to be done before the drivers are installed. There's nothing on the dvd to tell you to install them. There are little "i" icons next to the items in a list starting with software. You have to click the icons before stuff is saved from the dvd to your PC. I stumbled around a little thinking, "There must be more to it than this?", but copying and printing from the pc worked okay. I'm not used to installations being so easy.I didn't contact Oki support at all.

This is like an office copy machine in size and it's really heavy. It has a big footprint snd don't even think about putting it on a shelf. I would say that it's built pretty solid even if it is plastic. Isn't everything? It's here; It's setup; It works. I bought for reliability and that's what I hope I get. I'm damned tired of buing ink. I really don't need color since we have other printers for that. I'm glad a friend convinced me that a laser is a lot cheaper than ink jets in the long run.

Easy to use, easy to connect. Not real pleased with the "picture" install guide vs. a real manual, but you get it all on a CD.

1Worked fine... for two weeks.
By G. Spearman
Two weeks after deployment the printer ran out of toner (understandable). Bought a new Xerox brand toner cartridge ($249) and the printer says the cartridge is not a valid Xerox cartridge. So, we assume it's a bad cartridge. Order a replacement cartridge only to get the same error again. Call Xerox and they say we have to take the printer to a repair depot 30 miles away. I ask about upgrading the warranty to an onsite warranty and they say that is possible but I have to print out a configuration page from the printer to be able to do that. I explain that I can't print a configuration page because the printer won't print and the guy tells me there is no other option than to take it to the repair depot. I explained to the guy that there has to be a way to upgrade the warranty without printing that page and he says there's not. When I told him it's just crazy that Xerox would setup a system that would require their customers to drive 30 miles away to a depot when they were willing to pay for the onsite service the "customer support" guy tells me "Well, you had the opportunity to buy the onsite warranty when you bought the printer." So I tell him "Yeah, I have the same opportunity with the HP printers I've been buying. But I have never needed those warranties. This is the first time I've tried a Xerox printer and, thanks to your helpfulness, it will be the last."

1big waste of time
By d arivas
It took tech support 1 hour to get the firmware update into the machine.
The network scanning software is forgettable.
The unit is not compatible with the scan to email function, with Google, Yahoo, ATT, MSN and Verizon mail. In fact no service using a different port than 25 on the outgoing mail server will function.
At this point that is the majority of the big email providers.
Save yourself a headache.

Update...so there is a solution to this courtesy of their second level support, but even the documentation on the website is giving the wrong information.

Let me quote Nameer:

4Clear text, respectable speed
By Mark J. Shire
We've had the HP Officejet Pro 251DW for about one month in our two-attorney office. I bought it to replace our 13-year-old HP "draft printer". The print is clear and is as good or better as our primary all-in one, a Savin. The speed is good enough. I was impressed with the cost per page that I read about in comparison reviews, but haven't owned the printer long enough yet to make my own determination. At this point, I would recommend this printer without reservation. I hope it is as durable as my last HP printer.

5HP 251DW Wireless Printer
By NakLife
I did extensive research before purchasing this printer and i got exactly what it said it was. A superb printer that prints very fast and beautifully clear. It is sleek looking and well priced. The 2 sided printing iand the wireless capabilities puts it into a class of its' own. It is very easy to set up and use all from the large touchpad. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a middle priced printer and needs good quality and features

4Does what I wanted
By Low Flyer
The printer has performed well. As other reviews have stated, some aspects were cheaply constructed, like the paper trays. But I had no problems setting the printer up our getting it set up on my wireless network. Being a newer printer, it works well with my wife's iPhone and iPad.

4Very good printer
By Muzway
This is our second Oki B710n, bought for high volume use at a business. It is reasonably fast and has performed very well for us. Only drawback is the toner replacement is over $200, but it does get over 15K per cartridge, so it does last a long time. I would definitely buy another when needed.

5OKI C610DN review
By daniellsonn69
I purchased this OKI C610dn after having my previous OKI that was OVER 10 years old and had NEVER seen a service shop one single time. My previous OKI again, never had one issue. After going through over 8 HP printer products I really wanted another OKI so I found this C610 on sale at a great deal of $699. I purchased it and it has been about a year now and again, never an issue. This new C610 is blazing fast compared to my old OKI which by the way is still running fine. The C610 is at least twice as fast, little more noisy than my older OKI but quality is outstanding and I do NOT think I ever want to purchase anything but OKI. I just wish everywhere carried them and they were a bigger company that really fights for their printing industry cause i firmly believe they are by far the best and strongest built on the market and by far the most reliable.

2Doesn't Last much beyond the warranty
By Lester Wilson
Quality of printing seemed to be good out of the box. Hooking up on the network wasn't to difficult, works better with a assigned ip address.
Had it on a dedicated line with protection but after a couple of months out of warranty it quite working. Yhink its the power supply.
When you turn it on and off just a clicking sound cables all good tried different power.
No help from the online and Okidata email, after it took 3 days to my eMail.
Said try a new cable, plug into a different outlet. Did all that before contacting.
So I am looking for another Brand of printer.
I just hate these throw away ones that cost $750 as this one did.

Any ideas on a more reliable one?

4Don't Buy Genuine Brother Toners!
By Ross Kendalll
This printer is great and worth 5 stars based on the printer's abilities alone, seriously, but Brother is a apparently "very enthusiastic" about regularly (and frequently) replacing half-full toners with new Genuine Brother toners, to the tune of about $70-80 each. Yeah, right. I happily bought a refill kit which has worked fantastically in both volume and print quality. I'm not changing, nor am I wasting an extra $150-$200 every 2-3 months for my toners.

I'm writing this review because a Brother Customer Support Technician wouldn't help me reset my toners. After hearing his lecture on Genuine Brother Toners and his adamant denial to help, I offered him an analogy. I simply asked if he went to a car dealership for "Genuine" oil, brakes, service, etc. EVERY TIME he had his car serviced. He of course had no answer after recognizing his own hypocrisy. So, to help others that may end up in my situation, here's how to reset your toners.

If you have the starter cartridges, you will need to buy a refill kit of some sort, and a flag gear, or reset gear (see below for links). If that is done and you are still receiving the "Replace Toner" message, here's what to do:

1- Turn on printer
2- Open front door to access toners
3- Hit the "Start" button for the Black and White copies on the right side of control panel
4- Quickly type in the number "10" on the numerical keypad (1 then 0, quickly in succession)
5- You will see a toner menu. Simply pick you color(s) and capacities and reset as needed.

You can now refill your toners to a high capacity level for about $20 each, vs. $80 for "genuine brother" toners. Your cost per page probably dropped to about 3 cents each.
THANK YOU Brother Customer Support for motivating me to post this review.
All the best everyone!

ADDITIONAL INFO 2 MONTHS AFTER ORIGINAL POST:
Print quality on multiple types of paper is just as good as "Genuine Brother" starter toners. The photo print quality of this color laser printer is lacking, but that is true for most color laser printers.

I don't have any affiliation whatsoever with any of the following companies/entities, but they posted the info I originally found, so, here's some links to take you step-by-step.
You can get toner and a flag gear here:
[...]
OR, I'm sure if you type in "Brother TN-310 or TN-315 toner refill" into ebay or google you'd come up with some links, possibly cheaper, better, etc.

Here's instructions on changing the toner and reset gear (AKA "flag gear"):
[...]

Instructions on changing the flag gear only:
[...]

I have to say thanks to everyone who has rated this review as "helpful" on Amazon, it keeps it at the top of the listings and allows more printer purchasers to avoid getting taken for a ride on the Brother-Toner-Money-Train.
Take care-

5Excellent printer for small business (See tip below on how to make your toner last longer!)
By J. Rauch
We previously had 4 laser printers that have lasted no more than a year or so each. After becoming very tired of buying the cheap throw-away units, we decided to replace our old copy machine with an All-In-One. After a bit of research, the MFC-9970 seemed to be be the best choice. Although it is quite large, we have never looked back. It has been the best machine any of us have ever used! Perfect touch screen, beautiful prints, fast, and it seems to do everything and everyone loves it! The only complaint I would have had (that's resolved now), is that the toner didn't seem to go very far before seeing the "toner is low, replace soon" message. We ran it until it refused to print another copy, and then replaced the toner. After following the instructions in the manual to a 'T', we replaced the toner and closed the access door. After the first copy, we got the same message that the toner was low. After looking through the manual and every menu, it appeared there was no place to 'reset' the message. So I called Brother and a helpful tech gave me the instructions below on how to reset the toner.

Step 1.) Open front cover to expose printer cartridges and press #1 on the number keys.
Step 2.) Scroll down to find and select the appropriate toner cartridge to reset:

K.TNR-STD (Standard Capacity)
K.TNR-HC (High Capacity)
K.TNR-S.HC (Unknown)
C.TNR-STD (Standard Capacity)
C.TNR-HC (High Capacity)
C.TNR-S.HC (Unknown)
M.TNR-STD (Standard Capacity)
M.TNR-HC (High Capacity)
M.TNR-S.HC (Unknown)
Y.TNR-STD (Standard Capacity)
Y.TNR-HC (High Capacity)
Y.TNR-S.HC (Unknown)

Now we can run our cartridges until they begin to line out before replacing them! The secret that Brother does not want you to know about. Hopefully this tip will also save others as much money as it has saved us.

3Good but not great. Read Update
By D. Dell
I have two other Brother printers. One is an all-in-one inkjet and the other is a black and white laser printer. I've been happy with both of them and never had any problems. They did a fairly good job, but I wanted something a little better and thought a color laser printer would be the way to go.

This Brother MFC-9970CDW has good and bad points. First, the black printed letters are crisp and sharp. However, the color photos are only slightly above average in quality. Plus, there is some slight banding (lines) on solid prints. The banding is not too bad and hardly noticeable, but it should not do that. And I have tried everything the manual said to correct the problem, but nothing helped. Anyway, I can live with it.

The biggest complaint I have is the curling of the paper. Another reviewer is correct. The heavier weight the paper, the more severe the curling.

The speed for duplex printing is 6 pages in 1 minute and that is with plain text on one side and a map on the other side. Don't get fooled by the claims of fast printing under everyday normal conditions. In contrast, the scanner is extremely fast.

The OCR software with plain text is very accurate. Hand written text is another story and problematic at best. But then, that is to be expected.

Wireless setup was easy. The printer recognized the network then I just had to install the driver on my PC.

This printer can pull through heavy stock paper and the duplex printing is a real time saver. Plus, overall the printer does a fairly good job. However, if paper curl bothers you, then stay away from this printer.

Update on the page curling.
I discovered a way to help undue the severe curling caused by this printer. First take all of your blank paper out of the tray. Then place your printed curled paper FACE UP in the feed tray. Don't use more than about 50 pages at a time. And make sure the green sliding paper guide with 2 little hooks is in place on the end of the paper. This is necessary to hold the paper in place so the printer can pick up the sheets. Then launch a word processor. Tap the spacebar to fool the printer into thinking there is something to print. Set the number of pages to print, then tap print. After the paper runs through, the paper will curl in the other direction, but not as stiff. Take the paper in both hands and gently roll the curled ends back to straighten it. The result will be a nearly flat paper. Sounds like a lot of steps. But, try it and you'll find it only takes a matter of seconds to correct that terrible paper curl.
