5Great for Home Office
By P. McWhorter
This is a great printer for small office or home office. The trend in printers these days is to offer full color, feature rich printers at extremely low cost, with the catch being insane prices on the consumables. This game is mainly played with ink jet printers, where you can almost buy a new printer for the cost of a set of ink cartridges. This "gouging" also occurs on a lot of the low end laser printers, where the toner cartridges are expensive and limited capacity.

My initial impression is that this printer breaks that mold, and offers a solid laser printer, with the features you need in a small office, with reasonable cost on the consumables (less than $70 for a toner cartridge). Looking at the Ricoh site, I learn that the printer is shipped with a "demo" cartridge that should be good for 700 prints. The full toner cartridge, which is a little under $70 on Amazon, should yield around 1,500 pages printed. This would be a toner cost of about 4.5 cents per page, which is completely acceptable in my mind, and much better than ink jet technology, and better than other low end laser printers I have tried.

I am pleased with this printer, but I will update this review when I determine how many prints I actually get from the cartridge.

4Work horse with spikes on it.

NOT Mac friendly at all in the least. There is a generic driver for the printer, but OSX doesn't see the printer itself on the network. Connecting via USB was a breeze, but then finding drivers for OSX on their website was a nightmare. Apple has a generic driver for Ricoh printers. Do an Internet search for Ricoh Printer Drivers v10.0 for OS X.

Finding the Windows 7 drivers in Windows itself was also a fresh form of heck. However, once the 64 Bit PC drivers were installed (TWAIN and printer), this thing screams along with speed. Scanning with the ADF (automatic document feed) is lightning quick, at full colour, and 200 dpi. For crappy printed documents, such as carbon copies of dot matrix printer invoices, and carbon copies of hand written bills, it's going to look pretty awful at that resolution. However, that's true with any scanner or copier anyway. Carbon copies are horrible.

With regular coloured ink on a page, however, the results are reasonably good for document sending via email. The resulting PDFs aren't huge. That being said, if you choose a higher resolution, it's going to make a bigger file and that will take longer to send.

Printing speed is amazing, compared to our old HP CP1518ni printer. That thing plods along like a tortoise. The Ricoh blazes through at lightning speed, printing all the things. It is in black and white, which is a concern for those trying to print in colour, but I find that 99% of business printing is black and white. The few things we need colour for, we can use the old printer while we go get a cup of coffee.

Copy making is blazing fast through the ADF. I managed to clock 10 copies within just a few seconds after the thing warmed up.

That's the thing. If you have a lot of print jobs, stack them up, and send them through at once. This printer likes to go to Power Save mode almost instantly, meaning that startup times can be stuttery. If you read the manual, and go through the user settings, you can turn off power save mode, and have the thing ready to roll at all times. Since we turn off the printer before leaving our work, this option works well for us.

Pretty much everything this printer does, it does well.

Why did I dock a star?

Because setup was such a schlep. It took forever to figure out how to get the thing configured to work. Unlike the HP printers, which just work seconds after plugging into the network, this one involved searching for all kind of drivers. Also, the toner is not readily available widely, so you'll be going on hope and trust of third party sellers. I hate going through third party sellers, as I prefer protecting my investment with the manufacturer required products.

Once you get past the prickly exterior, this machine is an absolute work horse.

1Will NOT work with Mac. Windows only.
By K. Franklin
After three hours on hold with various levels of Ricoh tech support I was told that there is no Mac driver for this printer. None. And none forthcoming. So I can't report on how it works. This is a WIndows ONLY printer/scanner/copier.

Very disappointing. Nothing on the Amazon description noted that it was Windows only.

  1. Let us commence a journey into the much travelled topic of buy online scanners printers. The constantly changing fashionable take on buy online scanners printers demonstrates the depth of the subject. While it is becoming a hot topic for debate, several of todays most brilliant minds seem incapable of recognising its increasing relevance to understanding future generations.
