5Epson LQ-2090
By William Thornburgh
So far it is great. Took it out of the box, attached it to our AS400 through a 5250 emulation host, started it and away it went. It replaces an Epson LQ-2180 that died after 10+ years of heavy use. Hope this one does as well.

5Good stop-gap printer
By Sarge
I bought this printer for my company to replace a $3500 Epson DFX8000 which is now obsolete and repairing again and again was not a viable option. With that said, I searched for a more economical impact printer to do four-part invoices on continuous sheets. Later, I will go to laser style invoices. For this printer, it does exactly like it advertises and the actual appearance of my invoices has greatly improved with the 24 pin printer head instead of 9 pin. The ribbon has lasted for almost two months on a printer that does 65% of the work for a multi-state company. Once you figure out which font to use, it will double strike for better quality (slower print) or single strike for a faster print job. You have to remember to let the machine park the paper so that the paper thickness sensor resets the printer head and your paper does not jam.

The really bad thing is the fact that it comes with only one tractor assembly. That means that you have to switch the tractor assembly from either the front or the rear for optimum performance. If it came with two, then I could switch paper more conveniently. However, it was well worth the money I spent until I revamp the system and get a good laser printer when business picks up. Since it is a very good printer, I will be able to postpone investing more money.

4does not work well with mac
By Button Watkins
I have had this printer for years and it's thrifty and repair free. I switched from PCs to Mac but Epson does not offer a driver for Mac. After much time, I was able to get it to work, but when our printer drivers were accidentally deleted I had to start over. This setup also seems to get lost when I use my Mac in other locations. It will print from Pages, but Numbers is just finicky. It won't print spreadsheets correctly (no change to inspector) that it printed fine before. The preview looks great, the results are garbled. I try to track everything I've tried before, yet when/if I finally get it to work with Numbers, I'm never sure what was the magic piece of the connection puzzle. This is a fine wide carriage printer for a PC, a piece of junk for use with Mac Numbers.

5Super fast first page
By Richard A. Snydersmith
Never saw anything like it, cold start to printing in about 5 seconds and almost instantaneously afterwards. I also bought the add on media tray and absolutely no problems with the driver interface, hardware connection, etc. in controlling the add on. Even with different sizes of paper the auto paper selection works very well going between manual, first tray (legal or envelope) and letter in the media tray. Well design and a seeming solid printer (only drop the qualifierafter a couple of years of work). The text is clear and solid even under magnification. I would highly recommend.

5Solid Product !
By James F. in MA
Having previously owned an HP LaserJet 4 I had high expectations from this printer and it did not disappoint. Using it primarily to print hundreds of pages of tax return documents, it has done its job as expected. It is extremely fast and the print quality is superb. I would strongly recommend to anyone who requires a high quality, medium cost B&W printer.

5Satisfied
By dave
Previously, we had a color Samsung laser printer which was slow and used up cartridges fast. It also tended to jam a lot. After lots of swearing, we replaced it this year with the HP 401n and have been very satisfied. The HP is very quick, though a little noisy. The quality of the printing is great. I do not regret the purchase and would do it again if I have to.

1Terrible printer
By JanChuck
Do not buy this printer. I read other reviews online that indicated there were problems with a phantom "jam in tray 2" error message but I didn't worry about it since I have never had any problems with HP printers in the past. How wrong I was. The printer worked fine for 2 weeks and then I started getting the same errors. I have spent days (not hours) on the phone and chatting online with technical support and they cannot fix the problem. Not only that - no one is in the US! For this printer, support is in Costa Rica - I find it very difficult to understand them. To discuss problem resolution - it's the Phillipines. The only ones in the US are the sales people. I'm now printing using Tray 1 and manually feeding in the paper. I'm going to try to return the printer and will start over. Save yourself the grief and buy something else.

4HP LaserJet 3015DN
By Sunvalley
Setup is failrly strait forward. The printer is excellent quality. The secret to the HP printrs is before adding to the network, alwaya...always download the latest driver library and update the firmware with the latest firmware available. This really solved the paper jams from the high speed printing. This one has a quite mode that is very highly appreciated from the office workers and the speed to print is 7.5-8 sec which is also a nice feature. The big plus is that this printer is based on current medium frame HP printer chassis which are quite robust. This is in the mid to lower side for the medium business and works great for a 5-10 person office. The print speed is quite impressive and will hold an entire ream of paper. Testing it, I printed several small book size print jobs and finished much faster that expected. The add on of additional paper trays and accessories are plug and play with the correct driver available for download. So far has been very good purchase and if as good as the last midsize HP purchased we will get a good 5 years of solid daily use from this printer.

I have bought 2 of these printers for my company and am getting ready to buy a third. I have had no problems with these printers in the last 8 months. They are quick, easy to set up on the network (Active Director with mostly Windows 7 x64 clients). I can't find fault with this printer. I highly recomend it.

5Love this printer but ..........
By XrayCow
This is a terrific printer for the price BUT, DO NOT TRY TO USE REMANUFACTURED INK CARTRIDGES or you will find yourself in frustration mode . This printer does not like anything but genuine ink cartridges from CANON and every remanufactured ink I have tried leaves me dead in the water. Other printers have an option to bypass the INK CARTRIDGE NOT RECOGNIZED mode but, this printer simply will not function at all without real ink from CANON. It simply shows the ink levels as 0% and won't allow any more printing. Everything else about this printer rocks so, just remember to use genuine ink cartridges and you will have yourself one terrific printer =)

5Great Purchase So Far
By drowl87
We have a LaserJet 9050dn that has been our office's workhorse printer for years. We needed to add another printer because of constant queues from multiple users, but couldn't really find much info or user reviews about the new M603XH printer from HP. It has all the right specs that I was looking for and I just got it set up today. I didn't have a single problem getting everything online and running properly and the x64 and x86 drivers downloaded from the print server (Win Server 2008 R2) without an issue and installed right away to both Win 7 x64 and x86 as well as Win XP workstations. I've already had several users say it looks really small and the paper drawers seem a little flimsy (compared to the 9050), but the speed of the printer is incredible and hopefully it will prove to be reliable and allay the concerns of the users. Reliability won't be determined until it runs for a while without needing service. If I encounter any issues with the printer over the next few months, I'll try to remember to update this review to let future buyers know.

2Disappointing
By ronald arnone
The concept is great. Seems convenient, however, the ink cartridges are expensive and you can only print 36 pictures per cartridge. And, because the photo paper is located inside the cartridge, when paper jams, you can't get to it. My paper jammed on the second picture. Sent it back. Not worth the trouble for the price.

5HP LaserJet 500 Color Printer
By Rick Fuller
What I offer here is more of a "first impression" after having printed only 545 pages on my new HP LaserJet 500 color M551n printer. I can say that so far, the HP has performed flawlessly. This is a very nice, very well constructed, solid (and heavy) color laser printer. So let me give you some specifics.

Going from the box to your point-of-use is not going to be easy. This is a heavy printer (75 pounds but it feels heavier) and most people will want or need someone to help them move it. I helped the delivery driver take it off the truck and walk it into my garage. My wife then helped me get it out of the box and from there I slowly and laboriously carried the printer up to my office. Once in place though, you'll be printing in no time.

Setting up, and connecting to, this printer was easy. I have it installed on my network. I use Windows 7 Home Premium. Between my operating system and the HP software the printer is recognized without any difficulty. The software that comes with the printer was not the most current which I found to be only mildly frustrating. But installing updated software from HP's website is straightforward.

Image quality is much, much better than I anticipated. In fact, I'll say it's absolutely beautiful. Skin tones, for example, are perfect and there's no banding on a full-page image. And I'm just using plain paper at the printer's default setting of 600 × 600 dpi. I do a lot of PowerPoint presentations with graphs and images and the color/image quality is great.

This printer is very fast. From sleep mode, when you send a print job, the first page is out in 18.5 seconds. If the printer is already awake, it prints the first page in 10.9 seconds. These speeds are based on my sending the print jobs from my notebook computer which is connected wirelessly to my network.

I purchased this printer to replace a Xerox Phaser 8650 that simply could not print without regularly producing a paper jam. That was a huge and unacceptable aggravation for a new printer and it is my biggest "anticipated" though, as yet, unfounded fear with my new HP. Based on having owned two Xerox Phaser printers (the 8650 and an 8550 Phaser before that), both of which were highly rated, all I can say is that I will never buy a Xerox Phaser printer again. I'm now an advocate for HP laser printers. If I run into any problems I'll be sure to provide an update. Until then, I think you will be pleased with this printer.

3Rotation and Customer Support - MEH - Updated
By Roger the Consultant
Background:

I purchased this enterprise printer as a replacement for an older LaserJet 3600n that was approaching end of life. I have two of those with one still in service and have found them reliable. We use these printers in a small office with 3 people, and periodically print large documents - 1000 pages or more.

The Good:

The new printer is certainly easy to install and prints like the wind. Print speed is awesome and the paper drawer takes an entire ream at once, also a major convenience. Lovely print quality too. A further benefit is that the toner cartridges are significantly physically smaller than the ones for the 3600n, saving storage space (I keep two sets on hand).

The Bad:

We often print documents that contain both landscape and portrait pages. It is mandated by our clients (and regulatory agencies who receive our end product) that when put into binders the landscape pages be oriented with the header at the spine of the binder, that is rotated counterclockwise.

Turns out that printing to this thing from MS Word that is not possible. HP online support is not only difficult to get to but did not understand the problem or offer a solution. Their online chat community is much friendlier but also did not have a solution.

The workaround is to first print to PDF and then to print to the LaserJet 500, but this is ridiculous in an enterprise printer.

Yes, we've tried all of the available settings. Yes, I've installed alternate drivers. Yes, I've tried this with 4 different computers. Always the same performance - LaserJet 500 rotates landscape pages clockwise, all other printers in my office counterclockwise.

Personal opinion is that I'd send the thing back if I'd purchased it from Amazon (like I usually do) but in this case I got it directly from HP.

Recommendation:

Buy it if you only print documents with a single orientation.
Buy it if you only print from Acrobat.
Buy it from Amazon if you are unsure.

Note that if I get drivers that work (or any other help from HP) I'd raise my review to 5 stars. HP support would still get significantly fewer.

Update: For whatever reason I decided to try installing PCL5 drivers. Voile, it now works properly. The only issue (actually a non-issue) is that the icon for the printer now shows some sort of multifunction device.

HP was no help in any regard. While they clearly design fine printers I'm not convinced that they know how to do software V&V on their drivers. Fortunately older versions are still readily available.

5Printer for all reasons
By L. Woitel
I wanted to order some color flyers for the launching of my new business. All directions were going to cost more for shipping to Alaska than the printing of the flyers. I researched and found good reviews on this printer. When it arrived I had a bit of trouble getting the feeder to not jam. However, after reaching commercial tech support they guided me to a missed shipping tab that when removed made my printer work perfectly. The color is amazing, the ease of use is great. I love HP printers and this color laserjet is no exception. I highly recommend it.

2Great Printer - Insufficient Memory
By Joe Cambridge
I bought the HP M451dn printer after doing a bunch of research. However, none of the reviews explained that this printer only comes with 128mb of memory. Within a few days of operation one of our sales guys kept getting "out of memory" messages. The standard memory places (Crucial, Newegg etc) did not carry the extra 256mb memory modules. HP sells it for almost $600! I found what I needed at Parts-Quick.com for $13.99. The person I talked to was very helpful- a former HP person. I now have 384mb of memory and no problems. Why doesn't HP put enough memory in this one???
The memory you will need is CB423A HP 256MB DDR2 144-pin DIMM Code: EV_CB423A at Part-Quick - It was only after I did hours of research that I found Parts-Quick. The same module is available from Parts-Quick through Amazon but the Amazon description does NOT mention the HP M451dn as a model that this memory works with. See my similar review at the Amazon memory module page.

5Excellent printer for small office
By D. Matheny
We recently picked up one of the M451dn printers for use in our small business. We were using a Brother laser printer for most of our printing - and then switching to an Epson inkjet whenever we needed color.

Aside from having 2 printers, the main problems we were having were: the Brother printers in general tend to ruin envelopes and the Epson inkjets cost a fortune to run.

The main requirements we had for this printer included:

- Needed to be accessible through the network. Wireless doesn't matter at all - it just needs to be on the network.
- Good color capability
- Duplex printing - most of the documents we print are required by law to be duplex, and it's cheaper anyway since it saves paper
- Good envelope handling - As I already mentioned, I love Brother laser printers in general; but, they really do wrinkle up envelopes pretty badly
- Color printing needed to be less expensive than an inkjet - I know it's still more expensive to print color, but the inkjets are horrible!

Fortunately, this HP has delivered in every category. It is just a bit slower than the Brother HL-5370DW that we were using, but it is keeping up with our workload just fine.

I've always hated the huge software packages that HP bundles with their printers, but it was easy to just download the driver off their website and install it directly. The driver installer didn't have any issues locating the printer on the network either.

As far as print quality goes, it is absolutely amazing! The black is what we've come to expect from any modern laser, but the color just blew me out of the water! Honestly, I've always thought you couldn't get photo-quality pictures from a laser printer, but this definitely comes close. It excels at printing any kind of business graphic we would ever need - and does it quickly, and with full duplex.

Overall, I would highly recommend the M451dn. We've been very pleased with this one over the last month, and I'm having trouble thinking of anything we don't like about it. :)

3Great printer, but invasive software
By Joanna Ward
I bought this printer a week ago, and so far I think highly of it, especially the duplex printing feature. However, I am very disappointed with HPs invasive software for detecting authentic cartridges. Google "HP print cartridge authentication" to learn more. They do a good job of selling the benefits, but after some additional searching, it's easy to see that a number of people have had unintended consequences--nothing earth shattering, but annoying time wasters nonetheless.

I have been clicking the "Decline" button (even though I buy HP Print cartridges), because I don't want big brother watching over me. If at some point I choose to take the risk and buy a third party cartridge, that's my business, not theirs. The real reason they are doing this is to force users to buy their expensive cartridges (that's where they really make their money).

I can overlook the sales pitch to install their monitoring program as long as they honor my decision to decline to install it. Unfortunately, it ignores the decline button, and displays their obnoxious dialog box every time I print. I have two days left to return this printer, and there's a reasonable chance I will.
