Disappointing performance, poor fit, what else is there?

We've had our 9970CDW for about a year now, and I am generally impressed with its overall performance. I ordered this 500-sheet tray at the same time I purchased the printer. It arrived a few days later, and was modestly disappointed in the very "stuck on" look after it was (properly) installed. It really looks a little like an afterthought. It also adds considerably more height to the already-enormous printer, which is fine for an office environment, but in a home / home-office it dominates the room.

That would all be fine, except for the fact that it also *performs* like it is a misfitting afterthought as well. First, the printer does NOT automatically "know" that it has a second tray installed. You have to "tell" it via the Brother MFC software utility -- on EVERY MACHINE on your network! That's right, if you want to print to the second tray, you have to sit in front of any machine on your network, open the MFC utility, dig down, and tell it you have the 2nd tray.

That's OK for a small network like ours, and a nitpick that is easy to overlook were it to perform as it should. The real issue is that, with standard 20# 90% laser bond the 500-sheet tray will only pick up the first 150-200 sheets without issue. The last 300+ sheets will either JAM or fail to pick up entirely, halting your printer until you manually "clear" the jam or resolve the problem by adding more paper, thereby nullifying the advantage of a 500-sheet tray in the first place.

Just to clarify, this happened on two different printers using two different trays, then swapping trays and printers.

So, in summation, we would rather have a smaller 250-sheet secondary tray that works, versus a larger 500-sheet unit that offers the promise of fewer paper refills but never delivers.

Great option mass printing.

This tray holds a full Ream of paper. When our office does a mass printing, this tray keeps it going. We can print up to 800 sheets with out stopping now.

We use it on our Brother laser jet Printer/fax/copier.

Lastly I need to mention that it was so easy to install this. Every thing line up and it just simply set on.

Helpful to have but cannot make it default with top tray secondary

Helpful to have a back up tray so print jobs are not interrupted when top tray runs out, but ideally should be able to make bottom tray primary and smaller top tray secondary: T2 -> T1. Printer does not allow that configuration. So it's either just T2 or T1 -> T2.

Fast and simple to operate

HP provides a set of pictures to illustrate the setting up of the printer. I would have preferred words to go with the pictures. I have connected the printer to my LAN for top speed. The printer is very fast. Probably most of the printing time will be consumed by the PC because the printer only needs about a second per page. It appears necessary to use the CD provided by HP to set up the driver. I use the printer in connection with 6 PCs, 2 running Windows XP and 4 running 64 bit Windows 7. I had to use the HP CD to set up each one rather than simply adding a driver using Windows.

My HP Laserjet 4 broke after 20 years of use. I paid $1400 for it. I asked a repair firm about selecting a new printer. He said not to buy cheap printers but to invest in one that will last a long time. I can see that this is a quality unit that will also last a long time. Print quality is excellent, it handles a variety of paper sizes and prints on both sides of a sheet of paper.

There are other features that I have not tested such as printing from a remote location. My biggest problem is going to be convincing people not to print everything they see since it is so fast.

Very quick, both in setup and performance

This printer has worked out fantastically with regards to being a wireless laser printer. Setup was a dream, and network integration is a cinch.

I do agree with the review above about the screen being fragile (very accurate, a misguided swing of the hand will have it cracked no problem). Honestly, though, once you get it set up the screen becomes rather useless, so folding it down is no big deal for me, as long as pages come out I am content.

It has been difficult to find a decent laser printer that supports wireless encryption, but this is an excellent choice if you want an uncomplicated, straightforward install.

*** Technical Note for Business / IT Users***

Our Sonicwall TZ 215 splits IP ranges for the wired (192.168.X.X) and wireless (172.16.X.X) ranges, the printer driver DID fail to detect the printer across ranges automatically (Computer was 192.168.168.13, printer 172.16.31.178), but if you instead search for a "Wired" printer and enter the IP address of the printer, it will accept it.

Additionally, the CD drivers are a heavy on your hard drive, if you have a copy of their PCL 5 or 6 driver installed already, save yourself the effort and just add a new printer with a TCP/IP Port of the printer. My system automatically applied the drivers to it and life was good.

Good MFP

I purchased this printer as a replacement for a broken LaserJet 4200. This model features duplex as well as wireless and wired networking along with the standard USB connection.

This printer seems to work as advertised and I had no problems installing the printer using the included driver disc.

My only complaint is that the touchscreen feels fragile and when it is in the upright position. I could imagine a clumsy person accidentally ripping it off the printer.

Big with beautiful quality prints and low cost toner

Purchased this printer for business presentations. The output quality and speed are impressive. So is the size. It looks like it belongs in a corporate office. Placed on a 30" table top, it's up to your arm pits. We haven't owned this printer for long but we love what we see so far.

Printing cost is at least rated lower than just about any color laser (< 5cents color). Speed is up there with any other printer in this price range. I actually broke a small plastic piece in the paper tray. The warranty repair person was there the same day I called (the part didn't keep it from working).

The printer has an automatic standby and sleep mode which reduce power use (Sleep is 6w, standby 100w). While it's printing, it'll dim your lights. We have a modern house and the lights really do dim during printing runs.

Other than the part in the paper tray, the printer is well made. The only other negative I can mention is the stock toner tubes are 3000 pages which are pretty small. It may be typical to include lightly loaded cartridges but HP for one now includes 8500 page cartridges with their 4000 series color laser. Here's to hoping others follow suit.

The product performs as advertised and produces excellent color and black/white also. The price of this product was exceptional for the performance. This is the first RICOH printer I have owned but will not be the last. The directions are a little confusing but can be figured out.

Great Buy

This is a professional printer for big box prices. I had an unusual problem where Ricoh had to come to my house to resolve it (just my luck, the tech had never seen the wierd little problem before with a nearly external tiny piece of plastic), no problem with tech support at all. Supposed to be the least expensive color prints available. I have a friend with one, over 100K copies without a hitch, and bought it on his recommendation. Very happy so far.

Wonderful Multifunction Printer for Mac Users at Home

Great multifunction machine! Let me break up this review in the positives and negatives:

Positives:

1) Excellent compatibility with OS X. I'm currently using 10.6.5 and right out of the box the OS recognizes the printer. But I installed the driver from the CD anyway because it comes with the scanning software.

2) The scanning software is awesome! No-frills... it just works! You can scan into tiff, jpg, pdf, etc., and customize the settings in a very brainless way. I imagine that the scanning software will be great for anyone who isn't entirely computer-savvy. You can queue up pages to scan via software, as opposed to pressing buttons on the machine itself, in hopes that your computer understands what you're trying to do. This may seem like a silly "positive"; I put it here because other machines (like some Canon's) require you to do exactly that, consequently suffering from network communication inconsistencies/incompatibilities.

3) The print speed is very fast. The box quotes something like 27 ppm... I don't know if it gets up that fast, but from startup to the first page out I think it only took about 45 seconds. Subsequent pages came out probably every 2 or 3 seconds.

4) The design is rather compact for a multifunction machine. The buttons do not feel cheap (like some of the cheapo inkjet printers). Not too bulky; not too heavy.

Negatives:

1) When doing 2-sided printing, the duplexer is LOUD. Lots of mechanical things happening that sound like this machine may be subject to wear and tear rather quickly.

2) I first hooked this machine up to my Airport Extreme via USB and tried scanning. The scanning software wouldn't recognize the machine. So I reconnected it to the Airport Extreme via ethernet-- that worked. It's too bad because the Airport Extreme has a USB port that's dedicated to a printer, and now I have to use up one of my 4 ethernet sockets.

3) While the design is pretty slick, I wish they built it so that the paper doesn't stick out. I'm not a huge fan of the plastic "dust cover" over the paper tray... it looks like it can break easily if you accidentally open it up wrong. Also, there's another tray, or fin, that you install to the front that props up the printed pages that come out-- this piece REALLY looks like it will break if you put some weight on it (e.g. your cat decides to stand on it).

Nonetheless, this machine is SOOO much cheaper than other ones in its class. That said- all of the negatives seem acceptable.

UPDATE: (3.20.11) I've used this machine for a few months now, and it's starting to jam up more and more often. It seems that the jamming only happens when I'm printing double-sided. Some comments regarding the duplexer: If you plan on printing a long-ish document, like a 20 page essay, then the double-sided duplex is fine for the job. But if you're planning on printing, say, 100 copies of a single-page double-sided flier, it would be a LOT LOT LOT faster to just handle the double sided printing by hand. Allowing the duplexer to handle this same print job took a MUCH LONGER time than when I just manually flipped to the back side for the second pass. We're talking about 1-2 minutes if done by hand, versus about 8 - 10 minutes via duplexer (assuming it doesn't jam).

So far, I've accumulated about 1500 pages of printing. Using "econo-mode" set to 3 (out of 5), I've managed to only use 20% of the stock cartridge. Not too bad.

UPDATE: (10.10.12) If you have upgraded to Mountain Lion, DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!!! HP had to update their scanning software, which is a complete POS!! It takes up to 3 minutes to scan one single page black and white at 100dpi. Total garbage. What worse is that HP has not fixed this problem since their last update 4 months ago, despite countless Mac Users' complaints. Update to 2 stars.

Fast Printer but the ADF is not durable at all

I'm a printer technician and support over 1000 company offices, most of which use an HP multifunction printer for copies, faxing, etc. We purchased approx. 120 of these printers over a 6 month period. The failure rate of these printers is 30% and rising. If you buy this printer and make even a few copies through the automatic document feeder sooner or later you will get the dreaded "Document Feeder Mispick > Press OK to continue" message. It is caused by a defective part inside the printer which HP has supposedly fixed on the newest ones off the production line. The catch is that if you buy one of these printers and the ADF fails then you are stuck getting a refurbished printer and guess what - odds are it will have the same problem within a month or two. I have documented cases where one of these printers or the refurbished replacement has lasted only 2-3 months. You would think the printer is being overused and that is simply not the case. Usage in the example that was replaced twice in the first 3 months of ownership was right at 500 ADF pages per month. So if you make say, 10 copies and fax 7 pages from the ADF every day it is highly likely that the ADF will fail within about 1 to 6 months of use. If you call in for support you will be suck on the phone for at least an hour "troubleshooting" the printer even though HP already knows it is a printer design flaw. If you buy this printer you are taking a big chance. Even if they have indeed fixed the problem on the newest printers HP has lost my company's business thanks to all the time and trouble they've caused with this defective design. Maybe if HP decided to produce a quality printer product like they did 10 to 15 years ago I would consider them again. The same size offices that are still using 5+ year old HP LaserJet 3030 multifunction printers can't get more than 6 months out of an HP M1536dnf. The duty cycle ratings on the two models are about the same so obviously the quality has slipped seriously.

Buy it - it works!

Went on the search for an all-in-one laser printer, scanner, fax, copier. Considered HP, Samsung & Brother. I bumped into the Samsung (SCX-4826FN) at the office of a facility I was working at a couple weeks ago - they were not crazy about the reliability other than printing (auto-document feeder jams, paper jams every once and a while, software issues with scanning). Then I bumped into the Brother I was looking at (MFC-7840W) at a hotel business center - it was not printing properly. I thought that was a bad sign. So I bought the HP M1536dnf - and LOVE it. After 5 days of heavy printing, a bit of scanning, a sent fax and several copies made I can tell this thing is a work horse. The construction is solid, the software worked first time across a local area network (installed it on Mac OS 10.5.8 without a USB cable attached). Duplex printing works really well, scanning software is SIMPLE and easy to use. I'd highly recommend this unit! I'll repost if I find any negative qualities worth noting...
