Solid Build, Solid Networking, A Few Quirks

The Positives:

1- The machine appears solid and well-built.
2- Networking set-up was easy and all of the machine's functions can be accessed from any networked computer.
3- The machine can work as a stand alone Fax without having a computer on.
4- Printed text is very crip even in small print.
5- The quality of the copies are very good.
6- The printing cartridges are very easy to replace.
7- The machine is relatively quiet.
8- The machine came with great instuctions.
9- The software that came with the machine is intuitive to use.

The Negatives:

1- Fairly frequently, the machine indictates that there is a paper jam when one tries to use the manual feed. Upon checking the machine, one finds no paper jam.
2- In order to remove a paper jam, all 4 toner cartridges need to be removed. They come out pretty easily, but nevertheless it is an unnecessary hassle. (The top has to be opened completely in order for one to be able to pull out a cartridge.)
3- There has been an issue in the reviews that the printer could potentially cause a fire by paper jammed in the machine reaching a high temprature and burning.
4- Even if one opens the back flap to "prevent" paper folds when feeding and printing envelopes, they come out wrinkled.
5- Accessing and opening the back flap and putting a couple of tabs down in the back of the machine in order to print envelopes is a hassle. If you print a lot of envelopes you might want to look at other printers.
5- The machine cannot print to the edge of the paper in any direction.
6- The instructions do not show any photo papers being recommended for use whereas they show other paper types.
7- Photos come out looking a bit coarse.
8- No duplex printing.

OVERALL:

A good machine for a good price that has its limitations.

Exceptional Value for a Great Little All-in-One

My printer arrived today via UPS (free shipping, courtesy of Amazon). I lucked out and bought the unit when it was on sale at $329! Actully, Brother, HP and other manufacturers should give these machines away for free because the cost of replacing the toners and drums will far exceed by several multiples the purchase price of the machine over the life of the machine.

It was very easy to set up the machine and "pair" it to my wireless network -- you do need a USB cable to "pair" the machine to your computer and the network; the pairing took less than a minute.

I've always had HP machines; oh, how I miss my HP color AIO that died after seven (7) years of use. The specs of this Brother is better than my departed HP but the color on the HP seemed better (but the unit cost nearly $800 back then). I'll have to play with the color setting and use color laser paper going forward.

Printing from my iPhone 4 was a breeze and the photos I printed came out pretty good.

I'm amazed at being able to print from my laptop wirelessly. I have Vonage so I have to keep the machine close to the Vonage adepter for faxing. My home office is actually upstairs and the printer is hidden next to couch in the living room downstairs. I'm going to use my HP LaserJet P1006 for everyday black and white printing.

The HP printers no longer look good; they look bulky and plain ugly. This Brother machine looks attractive and elegant -- like the new BMW 3 series :-)

It looks like the price for this Brother went back up close to the MSRP. Even at that price, this machine is worth it.

Setting the time/date on the machine (for faxing) is not as easy as my departed HP AIO. I have to read the user's guide to figure that out.

I hope the scanner works well and easily -- that's next on my to do list: learn to use that function.

Update February 29, 2012

I ordered 512 MB of additional memory from 1 Arch Computer through Amazon; I should get it in a few days. I wish the machine came with more than 64 MB of memory.

The user's guides do not do an adequate job of explaining how to use the scannner; I may have to call Brother customer service for this (as I had to for my departed AIO HP). I couldn't find an option to turn scanned documents into PDF docs that would go straight to my laptop.

Maybe it's Vonage but I could not fax a 20 page document; I got an insufficient memory error message even though I used the "color copy" to send the fax.

I'm hoping the additional 512 MB of memory will solve my faxing problem.

On the plus side, the color photos I printed came out very nice.

Update March 10, 2012

The fax works very nicely even on Vonage. The extra RAM I added helps a lot. The machine scans the documents into memory and then sends the entire document -- very fast. Great for large document faxing.

As for printing photos, the quality of the print depends on the camera that was used to take the photo. Photos that were taken with high quality digital cameras come out very nice; while photos taken with my iPhone 4 come out a shade dark and not as crisp.

Next task to master -- learning to use the scanner.

I love it that I can print wirelessly from my laptop, iPhone and iPad 2 -- this novelty has not worn off yet.

Update: June 2012

I'm happy with the fax, print and copy functions. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the scan function to scan in PDF mode; I followed the MFG's instructions and set it to PDF but it still scans in JPG mode and the PDF image/file shows up as blank files.

Avoid this Extortionate Printer

We all know how the usual printer scam works. Printer companies offer a low price for their hardware to lock you into buying their highly profitable ink and toner cartridges. Then, their printers complain about low ink and toner levels long before the cartridge is really empty to try to encourage even greater use of expensive consumables. Thus, a savvy user waits until printer quality noticeably degrades. Usually, pulling out the cartridge and shaking it a bit improves performance for a little while, extending the cartridge lifetime. Finally, the cartridge is well and truly empty and it's time for a replacement.

Brother has developed an innovative and extortionate wrinkle. Not content to let the user decide when the cartridge actually needs replacement, my Brother MFC-9325CW printer locks up and refuses to print until the allegedly empty cartridge is replaced. To add insult to injury, the printer even refuses to print black and white until the user replaces a reportedly empty color cartridge.

After much online searching, I found a write-up at helpowl.com that explains how to reset the toner indicator:

"Push the button on the front of the printer to open the cartridge door.
Don't remove the cartridges.
Push the Clear/Back button to bring up a reset menu. There are 9 different toner functions (for simplicity, three K's, three C's, three M's, and three Y's).
For each of these nine functions in turn, push the O.K. button and then push it again to indicate `Reset'. After a few seconds, it will say `Accepted' and will then display a message that the cover is open.
Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each of the 9 toner functions.
When finished, close the door and the status bar will be reset to normal with no error message."

By resetting the toner alert in this manner, you can squeeze the last bit of life out of the toner cartridge. Brother sure works hard to make you replace cartridges before they're actually dead.

Overall, the Brother printer has worked well, and I am otherwise satisfied with its performance. However, I am outraged at the extent to which this Brother printer that refuses to print unless you buy a new toner cartridge, even when there's life left in the old one. The reset process was hard to find and seemingly designed to deter all but the most determined user. I'm further appalled that the printer refuses to print black and white when the black toner level is fine and it's a color toner cartridge that is allegedly low.

Thus I'm awarding only one star, and I will be avoiding Brother products in the future.

Beautiful Design - Limited Capabilities - BEWARE

After 4 years, my photosmart 4200 decided it no longer wanted to accept its cartridges, I decided to simply buy a new printer.

The envy simply stands apart from most printers as it simply feels more solidly well built, it's much heavier than most but probably more than it needs to be - the thing IS heavy, perhaps that's why it's ultra quiet when printing.

The set up is easy if you plan to use a cable. If you plan to use it wirelessly - beware, the set up may be a bit more cumbersome. My windows computer could not recognize/discover the printer's IP address, it took me an hour with tech support to successfully set up.

THE REASON I TOOK IT BACK: If, like me, you use your printer for work related documents, beware - THIS PRINTER CANNOT PRINT ON LEGAL SIZED PAPER. Like Apple, HP has sacrificed the practical for the aesthetic. I understand what the designers wanted to do, by hiding the tray and paper under the machine, hence making it a wonderful looking living room accessory but - they could have built an opening on the tray, on the off chance one wanted to print legal-sized paper. Also, for a printer at this price point, having just two cartridge slots: black & color, will almost certainly make your ink replacement budget higher.

If you want printer that is not your typical noisy, bulky, cheaply built plastic fare - this may be the one. However, if you run a home based business, or print different sized work documents from home, beware of its limitations.

A thing of beauty !!!

After extensive research on printers,I decided to purchase this HP Envy 114.It had the options I wanted and got great reviews from people on Amazon and from other comments elsewhere.
I have three different operating systems in my home.Mac Lion, Mac Snow Leopard and Windows 7. All three OS loaded flawlessly.All OS loaded from a single CD that came with the printer.I was able to setup the Network through my home WiFi with absolutely no difficulty at all.The software did it all.All I needed to do was follow the instructions as the disc loaded the software on all three of my computers.
You can tilt the display menu to fit your preference.You can set the printer to stay in idle mode so it's continually ready for print from any room or computer in the home.Or even set it to a timer to shut down.The paper loads from the front bottom of the printer.The tray easily pulls out when needed to be filled.The printed page spews from the front as well.The display menu and paper extension automatically recesses back inside the printer after you grab the print.It is so much more quieter than the Cannon I owed.The speed is very good also.I have not yet tried to use my iTouch through air print or the e-print feature as of yet,but I see no reason why it wouldn't be as flawless just the same.
Before you load the software on your computer,be sure to load the paper,ink and plug in the printer and follow the instructions from the printer's menu first,then proceed to load the software in your computer(s)
The instruction has a web site address that offers 20 free faxes a month.So if needed, you can fax the odd time without cost to you through the web without using a phone line.

I will gladly update in perhaps about 6 months time to review the durability.

Great Wireless Printer!

I already have one of these and we have used it for about 6 months and loved it so much, I just bought another. It takes up very little space and does what we need it to do. It is not a really high volume printer, so if you want one of those, this is not the right one for you. I wanted a wireless printer that I could print from for any of our devices: ipads, macbook pros, imacs, airbooks. And this does it without any problems.It does require attention to detail when setting this up, so try not to take any shortcuts. All in all, HP did this printer right!

Great little laser printer so far

I bought this printer on sale at another website the week before last. I settled on this one for three reasons:

It was very reasonably priced, especially for a color laser. The Amazon price is very good too.

The toner cartridges have about the same consumption rate as the ones for my HP color laser but cost less. (My only gripes with them so far is that my normal office supply dealer doesn't carry them and they don't seem to be readily available off-the-shelf at the major office supply chains.)

At 24 pounds, the printer weights just a little more than half my HP laserjet. It's also got a nice, small footprint, so it doesn't need a lot of space. Compared to most other laser printers, I'd go ahead and say this thing is as close to portable as you're likely to get.

The weight was actually my main concern. I run a dealer's table at several science fiction conventions and do a lot of printing on the road. Since I also have a seriously screwed-up back, it was past time to get something I could lift in and out of my car easily AND would still be as cost-effective to operate as the 45-pound HP behemoth I've been dragging around.

So far, the Xerox is doing well on all counts. The print quality is slightly better than my HP on photographs, about the same on text.

It came out of the box in perfect condition. Setting up was easy, but Windows Vista does not have drivers for it. I wouldn't be surprised to find out the same is true of Windows 7, though the printer is compatible with both operating systems. (If you're a Linux user, this printer will also work for you. Assuming you can believe what it says on the box, anyway.) The printer comes with the drivers on a CD, though - no worries there. Found it interesting that you have the option with this printer of going through your computer's USB port or ethernet connection. I did the USB connection, but it's always nice to have options.

So far I've had no trouble with jamming or anything else, but I haven't run anything but regular paper through it so far.

I'll revisit and update this review after I've used it a bit more and it's gone on its first road trip.

Additional comments, 7/30/2012

Just spent the weekend putting this printer through its paces. I'm still very keen on it, but there are a couple of things to be aware of.

First, it really is impossible to get the cartridges off the shelf, although I suppose a Xerox dealer might have them. From what I've been told, Xerox is just a bit weird about letting other people sell their cartridges for them.

Second, this printer doesn't have a whole lot of memory so big documents could be a problem. I sometimes have Word documents of about 25mb (lost of graphics) and this printer will not handle them all at once. I've found a couple of ways to get around this, but since these big documents are one of the things I need this printer to do I was a bit disappointed.

Otherwise, I stand by the five stars I gave it to begin with. The print quality is excellent, and this thing prints a lot faster than the laser printer it's replacing. I've tried out the manual duplexing and it works great. Both of which features outweigh the slight difficulty presented by the lack of memory.

A speedy, reliable printer with excellent output

This is an excellent color printer for personal and small office use.

I purchased the 6010 with Ethernet, plugged it into the wireless router in my network, loaded it up with paper (toner was pre-installed) and booted up my Mac.

My Mac immediately recognized the printer, installed the driver, and I was off to the races.

My first color printed page popped out quickly, with crisp text and good quality graphics.

Since then, the printer has been a reliable workhorse for everything I've needed. It works well with a variety of stock from 20 pound "daily paper" to heavier Hammermill 60 pound Color Copy Digital Cover. Every printout has been clean and fast, setup was quick and flawless, the printer consumes little power (and wakes up nearly instantly from "power save" mode), and whenever I need a printout, I just hit "print." It's exactly as a personal color printer should be. The low price and the quality construction are just nice bonuses.

when it worked it was good......

If I could give this negative stars I would. It was just fine initially, but it had a mechanical issue and needed some warranty work. No big issue there sometimes things fail. However this has now sat in a Xerox official warranty repair shop for two months, as Xerox has completely failed to support the product as there are NO repeat NO repair parts available.

Xerox should be ashamed of their performance. I have to replace a full function office printer and install an office colour laser printer in the next month. Guess which manufacturer is not in the running.......

Steer well clear, at all costs.

Nifty, thrifty little printer

This sturdy, little HP printer seems to be a work horse. It is perfect for printing ready-to-sign documents when with a client in the field. As near as I can sense, it has all the qualities of a larger model, but is small and light enough to carry with my laptop together in one case. I've had no problems at all and would recommend it without reservation.

Great Mobile Printer

This is a great printer and has come in handy more than once. I am in the military and do a great deal traveling around and this printer has been there to do the job numerous times. It is nice and compact where it fits in the same backpack as the laptop that I use it on. Have been able to print out items in the field being has a battery on the printer as well. Very lightweight and rugged as well. Is able to withstand some rough handling and bumping and still work like a champ. All around great product.

compact but not as fast as wished

The H470 is a nifty little printer and prints very fast, but there is always a delay of 10-30 seconds before printing even starts. At times the delay is followed by a message of a mis-aligned cartridge, so I find myself a bit frustrated at times. The telling statistic is that if I had it to do over again, I would have done even more research and probably gotten a different printer.
